Skuller of q2pro is a bit lazy. Too bad MVD hasn't been developed much further.
As Mortah said, it's a good idea to have a program connecting to the server and then be acting as a server itself (proxy) for others.
In Quakeworld, with MVD, they do it like this:
QWTV connects to server which offers a steaming MVD TCP-port. Clients and other QWTV proxies can then connect to the QWTV proxy. It is cascading. So you can scale it to 1000000000 users.
For commentary, the moderators use Teamspeak. They have a pre-war talk 30 minutes before the high-ranked league game starts.
Other people can easily listen to it. The peak of that Teamspeak channel was about 300 users at once. You can imagine the proxy TV solution had about the same amount of users or even more.
So, to sum this up:
- MVD would be great; someone has to take over Skuller's work and improve it
- Then you could even combine MVD with Q2TV and the users can switch with their Q2 client to any POV they want or can follow the admin user's POV choice - most preferably to follow the live Teamspeak/Shoutcasted/Icecasted/whatever commentary.
- Broadcast "Cheating" is no issue in Quakeworld since the game is too fast.
Some more hints in this direction:
- Current Q2's serverrecorded demos are not yet usable but claim to record all POVs already and can be recorded but not played back without problems.
- http://www.fteqw.com were the ones to have a cool QWTV solution. You can talk to them in #fte irc.quakenet.org
- http://www.fteqw.com/wiki/index.php/FTEQTV_FAQ
- http://www.fteqw.com/wiki/index.php/FTEQTV_Tutorial
- FTEQW QWTV also needed the server to be modifed so it can supply a streaming MVD TCP-port
- .. or it just read the file while it has been written directly from the server. (but it's a rumor.. not confirmed)
- Source for QWTV is available under GPL! But as said, it's for Quakeworld, not Quake2.
What can I do?
- I can tell you everything about Quakeworld
- I own several AQ2 servers where we can test your stuff
my 2 cents.
