You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container?

you fill up the 5 gallon one, pour 3 gallons into the 3 gallon one, empty the 3 gallons in the 3 gallon one. take the 2 gallons left in the 5 gallon can, pour it into the 3 gallon one, fill up the 5 gallon again, pour the rest needed to fil the 3 gallon one from the 5 liter. Th 5 gallon will now contain 4 gallons.

Fill the 3 gallon to the top and pour it into the 5 gallon.
Fill the 3 again and use that to fill up the 5, leaving you one gallon in the 3 gallon barrel.

Now if you had have said 'You want to measure 4 gallons (which is the proper riddle)' you would do it like this:

Fill the 3 gallon to the top and pour it into the 5 gallon.
Fill the '3' again and pour it into the '5' again, leaving you one gallon in the 3 gallon drum.
Pour out everything in the '5' and put the one gallon from the '3' into it leaving you one gallon in the 5 gallon barrel.
Fill the '3' again and pour it into the '5' and hey presto, four gallons.
