Anime thread

Recommendations anyone? I've watched too many bad series lately. So many series are ruined by some annoying characters or bad storylines.
For example Full Metal Alchemist could have been really something but I just hate the two main characters. Same goes for Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji managed to piss me off right from the start and it got just worse while the series progressed. Why does the main character have to be a teen who whines about everything.. just can't stand that.
Another thing I dislike is series without a real continuing storyline. Cowboy Bebop would be otherwise really high in my top anime list but where's the story? The whole show was just like separate episodes with no real plot development. FLCL was a bit similar but the weird humour made it work, though 6 episodes was really enough for it.
The ones that I've liked most so far:
Rurouni Kenshin OVA1:
Great story, characters, animation, music.. everything works in this one. The #1 in animenfo top100 list and I can easily understand why. The TV-series was not nearly as good as this one but atleast the first 60 episodes are worth watching if you ask me.
Berserk:
While the animation may be a bit outdated, this series has really unique characters and storyline. While the anime itself ends too short, it just made me to read the manga which continues a lot further than the anime. (Hint: watch the first episode last, it doesn't matter if you watch it first but you understand it a lot better when you watch it last)
Elfen Lied:
Released 2004 so I doubt that not many ppl have watched this yet but I really recommend that you do. Still missing subs for two last episodes but so far it's very very promising. Horror and drama mixed, extremely violent though. Body parts flying ect.. so if you have problems with that kind of stuff, avoid this one. The gore have not been overdone and it fits the series well.. not just random violence like in some american movies I could name.
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien:
Pure drama but it has the most sad and touching story I've seen in any anime. Don't let the first few episodes fool you, it's not some regular teen romance story at all.
Tenchi Myuo OVA and Tenchi Universe:
One of the first series I ever watched. Made me laugh but I guess this kind of comedy is not for everyone. Some of the characters are my all time favourites (Ryoko for example) and the story is not that bad either.
