Codec for movie?

Hey, i felt like throwing some stuff togheter, to make a short movie, just to try it out...I've done it in cs and stuff but i dont really remember(not easy to remember playing cs)
Anyway, i was wondering what videocodec and what program i can use for tossing in some music and shit like that...the last time i tried making a short movie(about 2 minutes) it was like 600mb compressed..
