Is that possible? Without distorting or cropping the image.
Do any conversions have other gl_modes not in 4:3 format? Or maybe some variables which allow ajusting custom resolutions?

There's a hacked quake2.exe out there, with the right resolutions, but it's probably crap. Maniac said he would make a custom res for me, 1850x something. This is APRQ2 (if you didn't know).
He said it might also be possible to make a variable, to specify your own resolution. Perhaps this will be similar to the R1Q2 client?

I quote from the r1q2 readme.txt
* vid_forcewidth - force a particular video resolution width. This can be
used with vid_forceheight to achieve non-standard resolutions such as
1280x1024 for 5:4 aspect ratio flat panels etc. BE VERY CAREFUL - setting
this could cause your monitor to attempt to do a video mode for which
it is not designed, possibly causing damaged hardware. Default 0 (off).
Overrides any width set by a particular gl_mode.
