R_Init: Couldn't set resolution

When i launch quake I get R_Init: Couldn't set resolution, and then it closes.
I know others have had this error too but browsing the forum didn't get me an answer on how to fix this...

I've tried installing new drivers for my Tornado GeForce MX 4000 graphic card but without luck.
I've also tried "DH Driver Cleaner Professional Edition" but without luck.

All I can remember doing after the last time my q2 worked was installing DirectX9

and I dunno much about graphic cards, drivers, or anything else surrounding this :o

and I haven't changed my CFG...

What client do you use? What resolution do you use?

Did you try ..
.. reinstalling your mobo drivers?
.. deleting your configs?
.. run quake2.exe?
.. playing any other opengl game?

Happened to me a couple of times, when I changed the refresh rate of my monitor in specific resolutions, throwing me that error when it was wrong. And then, afteer changing back the configuration, I needed to erase the auto-generated config files.
Try changing your autoexec in multiple kind of configurations, resolution and such. And you could also try changing your desktop resolution to the one used in the game.

It happens to me sometimes when im having vid_fullscreen 0 and toggling between irc / aq2. If i close the game then without fullscreen mode and just launch aq2 with my icon i get that error. Then ill start the default quake2.exe.. write game action in the console, its back to fullscreen again and if i close it normally with fullscreen.. the problem is solved.
