Those VfN dudes had one up not long ago. They even configured some maps for it or something. Don't know what happened with it then

Gangster is fun a couple of times. Most people playing on these servers when they are up dont understand the gameplay, atleast thats my experience from it. That's why it is boring most of the time :/
It's old code so you have to move backwards in time when it comes to commands.

well we hosted gangsters for a while with the goal to bring the game up to TNG standard. That proved to be a bit to mutch.

Finding Mike wasent that easy, but after a couple of weeks hunting we found him and he gave us the source for the mod.

When we sat down and looked at the code we realised tomutch time had passed since release. It was impossible to merge it with the TNG code. We would have to rewrite one of them. And that was something we lacked the skill, time and dedication to do.

so we decided to keep the server as it was and add more maps instead (gangsters used a primitive form of .loc files so it was easy as pie to do). But we ran into trouble there to, the code only accepted 8 maps and then refused to read more .loc files. Playing on 8 maps on a public server isnt any fun and for me to manually change the maps everytime we wanted to play something wasent really a option so the server went to sleep.

Instead we decided to do something diffrent, that didn't force us to write thousends of lines of code. We sat down again and looked at what the TNG code supported.

We liked the idea of a night fight server, since it would force the players to play in a new way.

We soon found orself a bit in love of the 3 teams option to, that was also something that forced the teams to think outside the box.

So one drunk night we configured up a 3 teams nightfight server
"Viking from North: Ninjas in the night" was the glorious name of that unholy bastard. It was fun like hell and we played for a couple of hours with friends from [balle] and a bunch of other oldies from #vfn.

When I woke up with a hangover the next day I continued to configure it. But fast ran into trouble. People cheated like motherfuckers on it with their video options and diffrent machines showed the maps in diffrent grades of darkness (mine was dark like hell and Nozakis was really bright is the only concrete fact I remeber). We trial&error:d for hours but couldnt make it as even as we wanted.

but that wasent the only problem, finding maps that worked with nightfight proved harder than we thought from beginning, they where totally black, way to bright but never perfect. In the end we had like Urban, Leaf, Wiz and storm to play on.

We also tried to make it a 2 item server, who dosen't want to run around with slippers, silencer and sniper and be a real assasin? But that proved impossible in TNG, sure you could pick-up a second item but the code didn't support selecting 2 from start like we wanted.

In the end I took all VfN servers down, I was tired of the scene, had lost most of my love for the game, put down by limiting code and an unsupporting scene.

I hope this little story can inspire someone else to think outside the normal box and try and host a diffrent server. The game has way more to offer than the normal teamplay server has to give.
