I use WebSpell's chat,
http://cms.webspell.org/index.php?site=irc and click zum Chat (popup). Works good, you can join any (quakenet) channel.
I haven't tried to go on other servers, but it may work.

this is what i do to get on irc from university (which has a very tight firewall):
1) run a ssh server somewhere on port 443
2) use PuTTY to ssh in, and irc from the terminal
