yeah mmk this is the situation:
a week ago my gefo fx5900xt began blocking my pooter when it had to run something in 3d. untill on my screen there were only 2d things, pooter worked well. but when i ran aq2, or even clicked on a window and moved it on the screen, the graphic card ... well... it was like a shut down, because the fan stopped and windows gave me a blue error screen (yes, winxpsp2) and the computer restarted itself.
this thing happened ALWAYS.
then i threw the gefo over the window and came back to my OLDEST video card: voodoo3 2000 PCI (YEAH!!!!!).
now. drivers: i got lastest nvidia and they include 3dfx ones. thats ok.
aq2: doesnt work no more. worked only once, first time i executed. now that i remember i started only the console, so i didnt played.
anyway. now the pc doesnt execute q2.
this is what i see:

nvidia drivers for a 3dfx card? not good. This is not the same thing at all
at the start of time, there were three different acceleration methods:
* Glide
* Direct3D
* OpenGL
Of these, Glide was the method that 3dfx developed. At least older cards by 3dfx weren't able to do anything else than glide, so you couldn't run opengl games on 3dfx cards. Now I can't remember if the last cards that 3dfx made could do opengl (voodoo3), but I think so. In this case you only need to get the real drivers for the voodoo3 card, and you should be ok.
If they only do glide, there is no way to get it to run with aprq2, as aprq2 has deprecated the glide subsystem and only develops the opengl and software clients.

yeyeye, last voodoos (3,4,5) supported opengl (voodoo2 and banshee werent).
so i tought that i had only to install nvidia drivers and my aq2 would work. but he wont!
i tryed even to rebuild a new cfg useing q2 but... it didnt work!
im going to try more ways, ill keep you informed
edit:
AND:
does anyone know where can i get some nice 3dfx drivers?
i tryed to google it but drivers that i downloaded didnt solve my problem

http://www.amazon.com/3dfx-Voodoo3-2000 ... B00000JDKT
one of the rewies said this:
Out of date for XP, it still works on my computer using 95b, and would work on 98SE as well.
so it looks like u have to find the card u threw out

I think I have something to "give" in this treat. I have used voodoo3 for gaming aq2 some years ago.
This screen do you get if you dont got the right drivers, and nvidia do Not! include 3dfx drivers in any of their driver packages......
Lucky for you there is some amature programers that makes drivers so you allso now can make your Pwn`age old school grafik card work.
1. Download and Install some drivers that seems to be right for your os:
http://www.aesoftware.com/voodoo5.htm
http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo3.htm
Google it!!
2. Get a Updated 3dfxgl.dll file for quake2, u find it here: (The only one that worked for me was the "Standard 3Dfx"
http://bryceinc.com/index.php?main=NoCh ... ds&type=dl
3. Set gl_driver "3dfx" (If that dont work, do it manually in menu"Video")
Notes:
3dfx cards where and ARE very "dark" in game, they are very bad with high resolutions, and when I used a other ref_gl.dll than the orginal my client crashed.
To make the darkness in game become better, I used video driver 3dfx, and i used "q2gamma110" to make lightness.
http://gamers.org/pub/idgames2/planetquake/q2gamma/
Download the orginal "Quake 3.20 ref_gl.dll" at bryceinc. (Same Link as above) And use that as the ref_gl.dll in your quake 2 folder.
I dont know if the drivers on the links on 1. where right. I can upload the drivers and files i used for my Voodoo3 later
I used aprq2 1.161, when 1.17 came I tried it, and it didnt work nicely, but Nocheat worked as a bullet and I used that until i got a ATI card.

I recommend that you also try to update your driver.
I had this problem before, and i just updated my
driver and it works fine.
