d-link is a very good router, price/quality
easy configuration, and do not have many problems

I have a Linksys wrt54g v3.1 with third part firmware: hyperwrt, and its very stable. You know linksys is a part of Cisco systems, and they are one of the biggest companys when it comes down to network stuff. So they know what their doing.
I will recommend that you go for an:
-Linksys wrt54g or wrt54gl.
If you choose a wrt54g, make sure that you get on from v.1x to v.4x, not 5 or higher, cus they got cheap ass firmware/operatingsystems.

My neighbour has a wrt54gl and he`s having lots of problems with it. It hangs up if he`s using bittorrent

I really dont have this kind of problems with Asus WL-500g , ye its old but ok, works perfect and it didnt hang up for a year and a half and it runs non-stop. Firmware upgrade does its magic
I`d buy Asus router

its quite obvious that you guys need to try other firmwares. The routers that you are talking about are rock solid routers, nothing more or less to say. Maybe you have sucky settings. Try third party firmware, like hyperwrt or ddrwrt.
