Server browser

Post by minchiano »

ASE is dead, or so I heard, but it still works to some end so for those of you who doesn't have it, here's what you do.

Go to http://in.solit.us/archives/show/142537 and get the files.

Start it up by clicking eye.exe and in File -> Setup Wizard, make sure the program find what starts up AQ2 (in my case that's AQ2.exe, in the Quake2 folder).

The server scanner is fucked so you can't just use the Refresh-button and think ASE will find them for you. You have to put every server in manually. Lucky for you I've already done that innit? ;)

Copy these ip's and save them as a .txt file somewhere, then in ASE go to File -> Import server list. A box will appear where you choose the Game, Quake2 of course, and File, where you browse for the .txt file you just saved.

Refresh and Voilà! You are set to go :)

IMPORTANT! More servers are added in ASE by pressing the Insert button where you paste the ip address you just copied. Just remember to SAVE them in the .txt file as well! For instance if your added server is down for some reason it 'might' drop out from ASE and if it isn't saved it's gone, and you have to add it again. This way if you miss out on a server, just add the whole .txt file all over again.

About it methinks. :yarr:

@ SuicidaLP: Heh. I'm not much of a ping whiner but when it reaches +300 even I tend to bail out. Played once or twice in Australia just for fun couple of years back with a whopping +500 ping. I even fragged once!!! :D

@ Uncle-: Ye, those are the ones I took ip's from, and http://z0r.nl/index.php?link=servers too.

It's still funny how we all come up with different ideas on how to browse servers. ;)

I have to admit ASE is still the best solution around - even if not developed anymore.
ASE is for windows. Linux users have always searched for a better program than XQF. Actually, they always wanted ASE for linux.. but never got it.

So, I have good news. There's a project that tries to create a serverbrowser similar to ASE in Java - so it's portable. The bad news is, that it is still far from being usable.

In other good news, all the websites to browse servers before sucked and I have to propose a new one to you:
