Is this possible? Watching AQ2 'Live'.

Post by n99 »

I didn't know where to place this actually. It concerns a thought I've had for a while now. Here goes.

What if you've got:

- A machine running an AQ2 client for an XX number of clients. [Large bandwidth]

- A seperate machine running an aq2client, which is a permanent spectator on this server. [Large bandwidth]

- Software capturing the material this client 'sees'.

- Software immediatly compressing this material.

- Sotware streaming the compressed material, with a small delay for buffering reasons, to clients wanting to watch the game 'live'.

Would this be technically possible at the moment? If not, why not, if yes, what would be needed to make this happen? For instance, I can envision something like the COTT final, with the spectator manned by someone taking footage, giving commentary, and dozens of people watching it with that small delay.

As you probably know, I'm not a techhead, but I don't mind tech talk here, considering the subject.

There is something called Q2SP that we have been trying to use in NAQL. But its very unstable and it crashes for some reason very often.

We had the eaql final of season 1 UR vs MI on 'livestream' if i remember right, or it was just shoutcasted. Further on, i can remember that i adminned a game in the naql [j] vs cSu where a livestream was, cant remember the name of the program, Q2TV prolly?
There were some problems with running it smoothly, but it is possible. You should ask ZooL about this, he kinda runned it out there on a lanparty in sweden hosting this, together with zonic? others?

Please go on Arild, post a link to this particular program, explain what it does, etc. Someone told me they had similar programs working fine for RTS games (in Asia), what is the key difference, is it the engine or the fps genre in general that makes it harder?

---+

Would this require a seperate program to watch this material or can you stream it on a web-based system. Imagine clicking a button on AQ2world that reads 'NAQL Quarter Finals Clan XX vs Clan YYY'...

U mean something like Enemy Territory TV or Wolf TV or Half Life TV ?

Or u are talking about videocast ?

In the beggining of Enemy Territory when there was not ETTV, I saw some final by videocast through Winamp. Don't no how, to be honest... radioITG did it (http://www.radioitg.com/).
Dunno how to sign..

Zool doesnt know anything about Q2SP. I configured Q2SP each time we tried to use it in NAQL, but it sucks, really.
Random crashes etc

Maybe someone could improve it tho? I should have it on the computer somewhere...

Well this is enlightening. Tell me, did you run this Q2SP on the same pc as the server itself? If so, could this make a difference on performance?

No, the games were either on BoomTown or eDome - don't remember - and the Q2SP server was hosted by me on the LAN I was attending which had a 2gbit internet line.

The program works like this: You start q2sp.exe(or something) which opens a q2 server. When you connect to it you're placed in some sort of lobby with a menu where you can press Spectate or something. If you've the admin password you can also broadcast(you enter a server and everyone will see exactly what you see) a game by entering an IP.
The other non-admin users can now watch your broadcasted game.

I shall look up the program when I get home.

But still, it sucks O_o
