is there a third dimension in the aq sound?
I was wondering if there is. My soundcard is about 7 years old now, so are my headphones, might be a reason.. I involve my sound a lot while playing, but i dont think there´s the z-axis used for the sound in aq. I mean.. sure, you often know if hes on or under the bridge, but imho its just experience combined with the visual information.
What do you say?

Well that's no reason, it doesn't matter if you've got stereo or 200 speakers. If the game only support xy axis sound, then you're screwed either way. Games can also have 3d sound, where the sound source is placed in 3d space relative to the player, and then it's usually the soundcard, or the drivers or the game that modifies the sound accordingly. You haven't thought about the fact that you can still hear if an enemy is behind you or in front of you, but not over or under. (I usually can't destinguish between exactly in front, and exactly behind in aq2, but I have played games where you can.)
You should really listen to a 3d sound demo, its quite amazing what they can produce with only 2 speakers.

Why not? I only have two ears.tyldis wrote:Oh, I'm well aware of that. They just take advantage of your perceptions. You know the normal sound and you also then have an idea how that sounds if it was behind you (usually a bit more muffled). That is no sub for real surround, though.
Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge... ...and some just gargle...

I would say that you can't create surround sound with 2 speakers, since they are usually infront of you, but just as gegoj said, we only have two ears, so if you use headphones, it should be (at least theoretically) possible to create exactly accurate surround sound with only two channels of sound.
my mate works at dolby
you can fool the brain into full 360 with a z axis
ie you can tell where any sound comes from
hes working on headphones with 2 speakers that do the full sound direction thing.
they use crazy equations and delay functions
really nuts, but cool, kinda hard to believe at the same time
"ive only got 2 ears" BAHAHHAHA
