Why don't people just play fair?

Hey,

I havn't played a clan match in about 6 months but I was reading a post about the finnish always playing games on finnish servers.

I just want to say that being from the UK it is difficult to ping to finland and other countries not south of us because of the line qualities etc and that Britain was lagging behind a bit in connections speeds at the time.

Now anytime that C&C played a match we would always try to aim to get a server in Germany/Holland where we would ping usually aroudn 30-60 and our opponents would have aroudn the same ping, (unless they originated from that country where they would ping slightly better). Now as far as I remember we would play a match and try to get both maps there because it would be fair as pings were the same. But, hardly without exceptions, the opponent clan would change the server to one where they pinged around 20 and we pinged 60-80. We would always oppose on the basis that we'd get humped on their servers due to pings alone. Nowadays we don't really give a flying fuck and realise it's pointless arguing because your opponents would just piss off and not play us anyway.

Now reflecting on those occassions I still come to the same conclusion that almost every clan will try to do that to win the game - and fuck healthy competition. All of you people who do this need to take a step back and realise that it's just a game. I mean, would you play a game of tennis where your half of the grass is flat so you can rely on a even bounce, where your opponents side is bobbled which would make it impossible to play? OF COURSE YOU FUCKING WOULDNT... unless you're a twat. Effectively it's cheating and I stand by that.

Every clan/player that does this are completely up their own arse and ruining the game of action and have been doing so for a number of years. They don't understand the concept of fairness... maybe it's just a difference in national cultures. If I had one complaint about clan games it wouldn't be to do with voice comms, chasecams yada yada.. it's to do with people not playing fair as described above. On top of that you get cheaters out there who cheat all the time and don't really care... what's the point? (rhetorical question).

I suppose though the only way to play the game fair nowadays would for everyone to be at a LAN with exactly the same pc specs, equipment, paks etc because as we know it is probably the only computer game where the skills of the players are so high that even different paks with very slight amendments can make big differences.

And to get to my opening line, that if finnish players are requesting both maps on finnish servers so they can ping at 10 and others ping at 90 for not just one map but two... then they should just fuck off and go and play counterstrike and leave the fair, good and proper AQ2'ers (yes there are some out there!) to play the game properly.

I dont really care about same pc specs, equipment, paks etc.. its a 9 year old game and most of the players have p3's... and I dont think how someone's aq2 looks makes him better than someone else.

I do care about pings though. equal pings is the way to go and please lets not make this thread a .fi vs the world thread again. Not just .fi clans want 2xtheir server.

I'm right-handed, and I like more to play that tennis game with my right hand, instead of using my left hand with which im not that good, if my enemy demands me to play with my left hand I rather go look another opponent, not because I will have bigger chance to win, but because I find it ALOT more entertaining to play as good as I can.

But anyway, I don't remember in last 3 years refusing 1each.. :p

I don't think we ever did, but we did protest on the basis that we would not be able to ping a 'great deal' better than the other opponent.

i.e. we use a UK server for our map. We ping say 30-40, they ping 40-50

we use their server for their map. We ping 80-90, they ping 10.

Hence why we often tried to get a server for both maps where pings were fair for both teams... eg holland/germany.

been said a thousand times... It's not about fair or equal or "good spirit" it's about fun.... I, for one, find it more fun playing at a local server with good ping (for me) and to be honest, and however inconsiderate it may sound, I'd rather have fun, than be nice so that someone else can have fun, as long as there are guys that are willing to play me on a local server.

Now me personally, I can play on other servers (than finnish) but that's mostly because I ping pretty ok on most european servers, but people with lowergrade ADSL connections might not be so fortunate, so you know what? Talking about people being fair will not help you, since most people want to have fun themselves, and don't care about making this game fun for you.... those are the facts... sad but true...

Oh. and I really don't think it's about that the clans have to "win at any cost" either... it's just that they don't want to play with a higher ping than they usually have...

Anyone with an "normal" connection, example: Fast ADSL, cant ping 10ms in finland, u need like 100mbit connection for that, or something?

If your ping goes from 40 -> 80 its 50% ping raise for you.

If my ping goes from 15-25 to 50-60.. its more than 50% ping raise for me to wich i have gotten used to.

Fair? No.

And it would be great to play with equal pings, the thing is, it's just kinda impossible to find totally equal server for both, and that's why one each is the way to go, so you can atleast play one map with the ping that you are used to.

Also, i rather play with the ping that im used to all the time, (play vs a fin if i can), but if i have to choose vs one each or both on "equal" server, i choose one each cos i havent played with for example 50-60 ping at all on my time in AQ2, im not used to that, i cannot hit shit if im not used to play like that.
And is it fair to play BOTH maps in the way that im not used to at all? Maybe its PRETTY fair, if the pings are equal, but still... fun? No.

It's as fair if u play one each, and you get to play atleast one map how ur used to.

This is my opinion about this matter.

And yes, dont make this one more world vs. .fi thread?

mmm.. i thought that if your ping changes from 40 to 80 it is doubled... so you get a raise of 100%..

but yesterday i played a few minutes vs ilmi, that if im not wrong its .fi, and they even accepted to play 2xour server because our pings were quite same (well not mine but im a weird case).

so dennis is right, not only .fi that wants to play 2x, and its also true that not all .fi pretend to play 2xtheyrserver.
all depends of what accordings you take before the match.

Bandwidth isn't what determines your ping at these speeds.

I agree so much with this. You don't play to make someone else to have fun. Same as winning a cw. Those are played in matchmode and the goal of most matches is to have a winner and a loser. I and I think alot of people would prefer to win than to lose. Why else would there be "homemaps" anyway! On a homemap you have (or at least you should have) an advantage (be it tactics, knowledge or whatever!) over your opponent.

So what you're saying is that you will not play on a server with fair pings because you want to have fun? Fun being that you win because you have better pings and that makes you feel good about yourself?

Hmm the term selfish springs to mind. Do you think it's fun for your opponent who plays at a disadvantage and loses because the playing field is not level? I've played matches where it was impossible to play against the opponent because the delay was unplayable.. all the time telling the opponent this who doesn't seem to give a fuck... kind of like you. Hmm.

You seem to look after number 1. Yourself.

It's as fair if u play one each, and you get to play atleast one map how ur used to.

A) It is possible to find server that you ping pretty much the same on.

B) Yes it is OK to play one map each on a server that is close..BUT ONLY IF THE PINGS ARE THE SAME BOTH WAYS.

The chances are however that one clan will ping better over all to both servers, and in my experiences most people ping fairly well to the UK (when Jolt was up) but the UK'er ping incredibly bad to Finalnd or other countries not close to Germany/France/Holland.

e.g. We ping 80 on opponent and 30 on ours
Opponent pings 50 on ours and 20-30 on theirs or whatever.

I dont mind playing 1 each so long as the opponents server is playable... playable is 55 or below in my opinion.

Hence why I would always prefer 2 maps on a server where pings are relatively close for both clans.. say all players in between 30-55
