problems when i change my resolution. help needed

well my desktop burned, so while i wait for the intel conroe series ^^ i am using my old laptop..
its a compaq armada series..p3 700 with an ATI gfx (4 or 8mb, not sure)
now that i stopped using nocheat i can't change my res.. whenever i try to do it, the res doens't change, only the size of the screen changes, but it maintains the res (always the same as the desktop).. with nocheat i didn't have this problem and i have played aq2 before in my lap...
since i started using apr or r1q2 because of some server requirments, this happens.. anyone knows why ? and how can i fix it ?

(let's just say that at 1024 the lap ins't that fast.. so i really need to get it down)

What resolutions are you trying to change to?

well, trying to get it to go to 800*600 or to 640*480..
when i apply these changes it stays in fullscreen mode.. though only the screen of game becames smaller (the smaller res, smaller the screen gets)..
