What do I need to start mapping?

Post by Ectoplasm »

Hey all. I'm an "old" AQ2 player who rediscovered the game recently. It was years since I played it, but it's still as good as I remember it!

I had some map ideas back then, but had tremendous problems with both hardware and the editor I was using, so I didn't complete anything. But now I'm really exited about trying again. So if anyone could point me in the right direction...the best editor to use, tutorials, and other helpful items perhaps... :santa:

Hello there Ectoplasm. Good to see that someone is still interested about learning to map for (Action)Quake2 :)

For starters I'd advise you to join #aq2maps @ irc.quakenet.org That's where you'll find most of the active mappers which are there for your service.

My recomendation is to download and use QuArK. Not just because it's the tool that I am using, but because it is compatible with so many other games and is still under development. Quark's homepage can be found here - where you'll find links to tutorials, compilers and other useful stuff.

Good luck with your mapping.

GtkRadiant (or QeRadiant) http://www.qeradiant.com
QuArK http://quark.planetquake.gamespy.com/
WorldCraft: http://www.fileplanet.com/44990/40000/f ... Craft-v3.3 (anyone got a better worldcraft mirror? and also, is that a q2 version?)
Tread3D: http://tread.planetquake.gamespy.com/

Anything but Qoole really :) Most people use one of the top three in that list, but I've used Tread3d too back before I started mapping for q3 and moved on to gtkradiant too, and I'd say it's worth a look if you want to look around for the best editor for you for a bit. I say anything but qoole, because although it might be newbie friendly, it corrupts map files and will slowly degrade everything that aren't 90 degree angles. Thus, save yourself that trouble. :)

as flunx said, #aq2maps @ quakenet is a good place to look if you want more info on an editor since we have (at least the top three) editors represented there, and I think the q2 general knowledge is pretty good too :) gl

Yeah, I believe it was a version of Qoole that I was using back in the day, and it made an awful mess of things...

There is a link at Action Gear site: http://marlporo.pp.fi/aq2/software/worldcraft1.6.zip

That's the version to support Quake 2 editing.

...my experience with worldcraft is great. but i know of many flaws it can give you and knowing how old it really is i would advice you to start out with either quark or radiant. good luck with your projects.

Hello there! Yeah, I've played all your maps (the Assassin, Facility, Hidden series, Radar, etc), and I saw in the readme files that you're using Worldcraft 1.6.

Btw, your maps are great (I really like all except Hidden2, which is a bit small for my liking, but otherwise good), they're both strategic and atmospheric. Hope you're planning to build more?
