ideas for a new aq2 standalone client

Post by slacker »

i dont know about you guys, but i find axion to be the best standalone client. however the developer, jaekiz (sorry for spelling there), seems to have dissapeared off the scene. with little chance of further axion updates, ive been thinking about creating a new aq2 standalone client using axion as a base and applying some updates.

things id like to address:

* include latest no-cheat and aprquake clients
* include modelpak1 and modelpack2 from the actor's guild
* include ete/tng client paks
* include zpak, zpak_update, and possibly any other maps not already in there.
* provide a decently working config, currently axion doesnt have one. perhaps rallu's java key assigner could be included here? if not i will be able to port spectre's php config creator to c/java myself
* include pre-compiled linux binaries/libraries
* include MacOSX binaries/libraries (should be able to get it working with the 32-bit textures using r1ch: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1gl/)
* make sure all files are lower case so it will work "out of the box" for most linux/bsd/osx systems, which are case sensitive.
* package all of the files in a windows/linux/bsd/osx friendly formatt. i will have to do some research into this, but zip seems to be the best choice. tar.gz will be considered as well.
* if all goes well, ask around for opinion and pick out the most popular sound/model pak, and include it.

* improve the retexture base, continuing the axion tradition of beautiful 32-bit textures

the last point, about extending the texture base, is something i will depend on someone else to do. the rest i will be able to manage on my own. ive paid particular attention to this thread: http://forums.aq2world.com/viewtopic.php?t=1098

i have waited a while, yet WnT seems to have dissapered as well? but the textures dont have to be the ones in his screen shots. i remember seeing Hazard having some beatiful textures in his pak screen shots. perhaps someone else could help assemble something similar?

i understand that there's a significant amount of bloat involved with this concept project, and the total size will probably be around 300-400mbs. but i thought the idea of an "ultimate standalone aq2 client", containing all of the maps available, a good texture base, all of the files you will ever need to play on any server, and usable on any common OS, is a great concept. i like to think of it as a "symbol to represent all of aq2".

a lot of people may flame this saying i am stealing everyone else's work.. but please give me your thoughts/opinions and whether or not you are interested in helping out.

I really think the AQ2 scene is too small for this. It might be difficult, but you should all try working together for something. Making something that works for everyone is half the fun. Maybe.
I don't give a shit.

ive seen your thread before shady. the reason i didnt download is because there is no information what so ever about it. what clients, what versions, where the textures came from etc. care to enlighten everyone?

the main idea about this project is it'll be a one time thing. once the work is complete, its just a matter of keeping it update with maps and clients (which seem to be the only aq2 related things being updated). otherwise the rest of the work will have already tied in everything else.

although, ill never consider this concept complete until quake2 is completely retextured i guess. which may never happen :(

over here in australia a lot of people use axion. not everyone, but a good number of people do. infact the main reason the flood of no-cheat clients started playing on our servers is because people starting to use axion. we also saw a number of people returning to the game, and getting their friends into the game, once a standalone client as good as axion was released. people like the convenience and ease of use.

so it could just be that aq2 standalone is more popular over here, the main reason probably being that "action" is the only quake2 mod still played over here. ctf and gloom communities have all died off, nobody plays them anymore.

i guess thats why i see aq2 standalone clients as something useful. have you seen the screen shots of the retextures in the link from my first post? makes aq2 look so much more beautiful.
