Akuta's Jumping Guide - "My Way"
Ok I've decided to make a jumping guide for those who wanna know. I get tired of being asked abou what I do to be a good jumper on mIRC. I really don't wanna explain everything to everyone that wanna know. Especially the "newbies" out there. Note that I don't wanna learn you, I do. But it gets tiresome sometimes. So here's a guide from me to you, and it's based on the nVIDIA graphic cards. I'll go through what settings you wanna use and what commands in your autoexec would be to get the fullest out of your jumping skills.
And by the way. This is my way of doing things, and I write this with my
own experience. If you got another jumping guide to show off, make a new one and post it elsewhere
Hertz\Monitor
The fps and screen monitor's hertz connect to each other. If your hertz on your monitor is 60, its best for the aq2 to run a fps and display frequency at 60, or 59. To check out your hertz on your monitor just right click your desktop and open up your properties. Move on to settings and click the advanced button. Move to monitor and there you are. Your hertz. Choose whatever hertz you wanna use. In my case i use 75, and got cl_maxfps 75 and display frecuency on 75.
The commands in your autoexec to follow up to these settings are
cl_maxfps 59 (or 60)
vid_displayfrequency "60"
Vertical Sync
In my experience ive always liked the vertical sync off settings in my 3d card settings. This setting is making the monitor to load the picture in 3 parts. And in aq2 you will see 2 flimmers at approx. in middle of the screen. This might irretate you for a while at the beginning, but when you get used to it you will notice the aq2 runs more smooth than ever and its the best major setting to improve your jumping skills.
To disable this vertican sync and put it off is done by right click your desktop and get into your properties again.Move onto settings and click advanced. You need to open up your nVIDIA control panel for the newest graphic cards i guess.
In the nVIDIA control panel you need to manage your 3d settings. You can either choose to manage the 3d settings on AQ2 only but then you need to browse and add it to the application settings list. In my case i would like to enable the feature in global.
Different fps binds
In my autoexec i use 2 different cl_maxfps settings. Sometimes I need to get my fps a little lower to make those amazing jumps, example: In cloud. I need in my case 70 to make my ladder jump at the beginning of the spawn to jump onto the upper level the fastest way possible. And I need it when I boxjump onto the second highest roof. You will know what jumps I am talking about if you see my jumping movies in another section of this forum. The most ideal binds for me is to use my mouse wheel to differ between the fps settings. When I scroll the mouse wheel upwards i get cl_maxfps 75 and down I get 70. Its all up to you what you wanna bind it to though.
Here is the most important commands you need to have now in your config.
bind mwheelup cl_maxfps "75"
bind mwheeldown cl_maxfps "70"
set vid_displayfrequency "75"
set cl_maxfps "75"
set gl_ext_swapinterval "1"
Jumping
- Strafing
- Walljump
- Slidejump
- Boxjump
- Ladderjump
Strafing
The most common word for it I think It's strafing. I haven'd really done research on what the names are on the different "styles" are, but I will try to explain it as good as I can.
Strafing is when you get more and more speed after each jump you take. This is how you are able to do the "urban jump" The highest roof over to the middle. By doing this you will need to concentrate on your movement buttons while you slightly move your mouse with the buttons. The example i will show you are gonna be by moving forward, backwards, right and left is W,S,A,D.
With this movement, and offcouse include the jump. This will make you a faster player! You will need practise with this, and I used alot of time on urban for doing the "urban jump" and to master it I sat and played for hours and hours. Eventually I made it. And I moved on to ladderjumps etc. This will take time for some, and not that long for some. Just be prepared that you wont make it the first try if you are completely new to the game.
Walljump
Kiss the wall, and jump when you are kissing it. While doing this you need to hold your aim at..lets say 30 degrees west or east. Depends on wich side the wall is. Move the mouse slightly towards the wall when you jump at the same time. Hard to understand?
Lets say the wall is on the right. And when you are right next to the wall: Push W+A, Jump and move the mouse slightly from the 30 degrees and move the aim towards the wall. This will give you more speed than just normal strafejumping. This works when in water aswell.
Slidejump
I don't know the official name for this type of jump. But a perfect example on this is my jumpmovie for Rcity. At the middle roof there is a slight downside and on this you can slide across while holding down W+A or W+D or switch between these two and at the end jump with a great speed.
Slidejump basically means you slide across a downhill without jumping and still have the same speed as you were strafejumping.
Boxjump
Boxjump is when you jump towards a box and jump once again to gain more speed forward or jump higher. You can do a nice manouvre while confusing an opponent. By jumping over him or jump at a higher level that the enemy are. To do this you just run\walk towards a box and click the jumping button quick. Sometimes you double click faster and sometimes slower. It depends on the boxes. I prefer using the mouse2 button to jump. Cause then I am able to boxjump the tiny little boxes that you need to double click at a rapid speed.
Ladderjump
Ladderjump is when you are at the top of the ladder, you can press the jump button once again to bounce upwards to reach a higher level area or jump upwards to confuse your opponent. To do this just needs some practise. Some ladders are easy to jump from and some are not. Try twisting your aim a little maybe.
I guess thats it. If you are having problems understanding this just write it here in the post as a reply and i will change the guide everytime someone says i forgot something.
I WILL add more to this guide at the coming future.

My experience with vertical sync on? I just dont like it. You can't jump the jumps you want to at a certain speed. I like to do combo jumps and do it real fast. Thats the key in aq2 :p With vertical sync its just slow..i just dont like it. I can't jump as good when I have it on. But thats just me. Im a vertical sync off person.Uncle- wrote:All these with cl_async "0"
What are your experiences with "1"?
That aint vertical sync
cl_async, master cvar to control FPS separation. If set to 0, no FPS separation occurs and every rendered frame results in a packet to the server.
if cl_async 1 then
cl_maxfps 60 ( you send 60 packets to a server)
r_maxfps 120 ( this is you screen framerate )
else cl_async 0 then
cl_maxfps == r_maxfps ( old quake2 style, 1frame = 1packet )

And where's the jumping guide?
I mean, this is just a very linear explanation of "how to play with low fps and think you are pro by doing so". I mean, what else do you need to know that below some FPS (60-80ish) it's rather easy to ladder, strafe and double jump, but you won't be able to jump those higher ledges (like the crates in Teamjungle), unless you set your FPS to over hundred.
How to get more than 100 FPS without feeling your video working jerky and unsync'ed? Get a monitor that has a refresh rate higher than 100Hz in the resolution you play Quake or override your framerate by turning vertical synchronization off and, to avoid the unsync'ed frames Akuta tells "you will get used to it" set a framerate that doubles, triples or is simple a multiple of your refresh rate (@ 60Hz capping your FPS to 120, 180, 240, etc. will do).
Anyway, this isn't a jumping guide, it just isn't. The same way those jumping videos aren't really useful for someone who can't really jump.
Gosh, just reading the intro irritates me. Get a freaking good idea first, for pete's sake.

Did you skip that i use bindings for my scroll on the mouse for several jumps? I can jump the crates on the teamjungle by changing my fps in 0.1s and back to the normal 0.1s later. I said earlier that this is my experience and mine only. This tells you how i got my settings tuned and my way of doing the jumps. This doesnt tell you that you have to use these settings to be a pro jumper. And for the jumping videos ive already explained why I do them. There are many people asking me to make more movies, although people like you tend to disagree about that. I wrote this cause of many request on IRC what settings they had to use to jump like i did and so on. So shut the fuck up and ifyou already read the intro you should know that posting whining in this post is not my intention. I just shared the info, my experience and how to use my settings on request.Caracol wrote:And where's the jumping guide?

I know this is a old way of doing things. But this is what I have been using all years since i started in 98 or something. I have always been a jumper and are never going to quit being so. And btw, all the q2jumpers also say 60 fps is the best fps by jumping jumps. Btw, dont come here and say i dont know how to jump. I can do all the jumps you ask me to do. I know what I am talking about.

Do you want me to come over to you wherever you live to show you how to push the buttons aswell? I will add a more specific guide to actually what to do on your keyboard. And your mouse if you jump with the mouse button(s)..i can see your point in this whining session. But please. Just tell me what you think i should have here instead of knocking me down. You can do better criticism than this:)Caracol wrote:And where's the jumping guide?

And IBA, it's not about twisting anyone's words, I just dislike people doing (nearly) useless stuff when they could do more. I really dislike mediocrity.
It's like the TATM, it's not gonna save anything, if the same people that are doing silly jump stuff, silly transfer stuff and acusing (again) a cheater would just start a 1on1 cup, a 2on2 cup or even a catch the bunny cup would suffice to keep this a couple of months awake.
Were Cheef and MadCow writing a tutorial about knife slashing? No, they started a (very successful) league.
