Akuta's Jumping Guide - "My Way"
Posted: Fri Mar 14, 2008 7:23 am
Ok I've decided to make a jumping guide for those who wanna know. I get tired of being asked abou what I do to be a good jumper on mIRC. I really don't wanna explain everything to everyone that wanna know. Especially the "newbies" out there. Note that I don't wanna learn you, I do. But it gets tiresome sometimes. So here's a guide from me to you, and it's based on the nVIDIA graphic cards. I'll go through what settings you wanna use and what commands in your autoexec would be to get the fullest out of your jumping skills.
And by the way. This is my way of doing things, and I write this with my
own experience. If you got another jumping guide to show off, make a new one and post it elsewhere
Hertz\Monitor
The fps and screen monitor's hertz connect to each other. If your hertz on your monitor is 60, its best for the aq2 to run a fps and display frequency at 60, or 59. To check out your hertz on your monitor just right click your desktop and open up your properties. Move on to settings and click the advanced button. Move to monitor and there you are. Your hertz. Choose whatever hertz you wanna use. In my case i use 75, and got cl_maxfps 75 and display frecuency on 75.
The commands in your autoexec to follow up to these settings are
cl_maxfps 59 (or 60)
vid_displayfrequency "60"
Vertical Sync
In my experience ive always liked the vertical sync off settings in my 3d card settings. This setting is making the monitor to load the picture in 3 parts. And in aq2 you will see 2 flimmers at approx. in middle of the screen. This might irretate you for a while at the beginning, but when you get used to it you will notice the aq2 runs more smooth than ever and its the best major setting to improve your jumping skills.
To disable this vertican sync and put it off is done by right click your desktop and get into your properties again.Move onto settings and click advanced. You need to open up your nVIDIA control panel for the newest graphic cards i guess.
In the nVIDIA control panel you need to manage your 3d settings. You can either choose to manage the 3d settings on AQ2 only but then you need to browse and add it to the application settings list. In my case i would like to enable the feature in global.
Different fps binds
In my autoexec i use 2 different cl_maxfps settings. Sometimes I need to get my fps a little lower to make those amazing jumps, example: In cloud. I need in my case 70 to make my ladder jump at the beginning of the spawn to jump onto the upper level the fastest way possible. And I need it when I boxjump onto the second highest roof. You will know what jumps I am talking about if you see my jumping movies in another section of this forum. The most ideal binds for me is to use my mouse wheel to differ between the fps settings. When I scroll the mouse wheel upwards i get cl_maxfps 75 and down I get 70. Its all up to you what you wanna bind it to though.
Here is the most important commands you need to have now in your config.
bind mwheelup cl_maxfps "75"
bind mwheeldown cl_maxfps "70"
set vid_displayfrequency "75"
set cl_maxfps "75"
set gl_ext_swapinterval "1"
Jumping
- Strafing
- Walljump
- Slidejump
- Boxjump
- Ladderjump
Strafing
The most common word for it I think It's strafing. I haven'd really done research on what the names are on the different "styles" are, but I will try to explain it as good as I can.
Strafing is when you get more and more speed after each jump you take. This is how you are able to do the "urban jump" The highest roof over to the middle. By doing this you will need to concentrate on your movement buttons while you slightly move your mouse with the buttons. The example i will show you are gonna be by moving forward, backwards, right and left is W,S,A,D.
With this movement, and offcouse include the jump. This will make you a faster player! You will need practise with this, and I used alot of time on urban for doing the "urban jump" and to master it I sat and played for hours and hours. Eventually I made it. And I moved on to ladderjumps etc. This will take time for some, and not that long for some. Just be prepared that you wont make it the first try if you are completely new to the game.
Walljump
Kiss the wall, and jump when you are kissing it. While doing this you need to hold your aim at..lets say 30 degrees west or east. Depends on wich side the wall is. Move the mouse slightly towards the wall when you jump at the same time. Hard to understand?
Lets say the wall is on the right. And when you are right next to the wall: Push W+A, Jump and move the mouse slightly from the 30 degrees and move the aim towards the wall. This will give you more speed than just normal strafejumping. This works when in water aswell.
Slidejump
I don't know the official name for this type of jump. But a perfect example on this is my jumpmovie for Rcity. At the middle roof there is a slight downside and on this you can slide across while holding down W+A or W+D or switch between these two and at the end jump with a great speed.
Slidejump basically means you slide across a downhill without jumping and still have the same speed as you were strafejumping.
Boxjump
Boxjump is when you jump towards a box and jump once again to gain more speed forward or jump higher. You can do a nice manouvre while confusing an opponent. By jumping over him or jump at a higher level that the enemy are. To do this you just run\walk towards a box and click the jumping button quick. Sometimes you double click faster and sometimes slower. It depends on the boxes. I prefer using the mouse2 button to jump. Cause then I am able to boxjump the tiny little boxes that you need to double click at a rapid speed.
Ladderjump
Ladderjump is when you are at the top of the ladder, you can press the jump button once again to bounce upwards to reach a higher level area or jump upwards to confuse your opponent. To do this just needs some practise. Some ladders are easy to jump from and some are not. Try twisting your aim a little maybe.
I guess thats it. If you are having problems understanding this just write it here in the post as a reply and i will change the guide everytime someone says i forgot something.
I WILL add more to this guide at the coming future.
